This film clearly drives home one main point: It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. If you can identify and/or agree with that, you will find that Eternal Sunshine will really touch you emotionally if you allow it to. This film's main goal is not necessarily to make you laugh, but it really wants you to think a little deeper about life, love and whether the roller-coaster ride of relationships are really worth it.

I would be hesitant to classify Eternal Sunshine as a 'comedy' only because I think some people might be disappointed with this film if they enter with those expectations. Jim Carrey is excellent in this funny, yet serious and dramatic role. I would even go as far to say that he might even be worthy of an Oscar nomination. Other than award-winning actors like Tom Hanks or Robin Williams, there are very few who have the talent to play both ends of the emotional spectrum (goofy and serious) and manage pull it off so well.

The movie itself is a bit confusing and you are really given the responsibility of trying to keep everything together in your own mind while Joel (Carrey) struggles to do the same in his own. The nice thing is that the ending is pretty clear and understandable. Sometimes when a movie is on the confusing side, it often ends just as confusing. The only thing you are left to ponder at its conclusion is, "would you have done the same if you were him?"

Overall, I liked Eternal Sunshine. I think I would need to see it again to be able to fully digest it. It's pretty deep and complex and yet, it's not too mind-boggling. It's also a very romantic film at heart without all the gushy stuff getting in the way. I mostly give it credit for being an original movie in a time where originality seems to be growing more and more extinct in Hollywood movie-making.
