I must admit, the movies made for the Christmas season have not apealled to me for years. I still haven't watched all of the Grinch. But Will Ferrell as a six foot Elf! I couldn't resist.
If a lot of people are like me, they laugh at just the thought of Ferrell doing anything. Once again he brings us to tears at times with this performance of ignorant bliss.
As the thirty year old elf, he just isn't cutting it in Santa's workshop. Upon hearing the gossip of fellow worker elves about him not actually being and elf, but a human, his world crashes around him. So he decides to go the New York, of all places, to find his father.
The visuals used as the North Pole are just insane. Most of it is designed from the sixties era Rudolph and Santa animation, but modernized with a little more color. It's definitely eye candy in the theater.
Buddy's first experiences upon entering New York are some of the funniest scenes in the movie. After being denied the first time by his work pressured father, Buddy finds himself stumbling into a job as an elf at a department store. The boss is mean, but he meets a girl (Zooey Deschanel) and learns of Santa's coming- both very big things for him.
Overall, the movie carries a happy, yet somewhat predictable storyline. It is a happily ever after ending with the feel goodiness of the Christmas Spirit. Will Ferrell is a comedic genius as the innocent elf/human. |
