When the Oscar-nominations rolled around, I was surprised to see this small film on the nominations list that I had never heard of. When I was in a video store, I saw that it had recently come to video and decided to see for myself what all the fuss was about. I can honestly say now that "Pieces of April" deserves whatever award it is nominated for. I've never seen such a moving, funny, and original film before presented like this film was. The story is so simple, it almost seems impossible that this film could be any good. But it's what underneath the story - the moral, I guess - that makes this film so enjoyable. The performances are wonderful (Patricia Clarkson is hilarious, and tearjerking, as a cancer victim with a wry sense of humor - she has been nominated for a much deserved "Best Supporting Actress" award), and the direction of the film is also impressive. After watching the film, I went out and bought "Pieces of April", a film that I can truely say is one of the best of the year. |
