Keep an open mind and you'll enjoy Troy

The story is familiar to some if not most of us. For those who had high hopes to see an unabridged version of the Iliad will surely be disappointed. For viewers without any preconception this film will be as enjoyable as the Lord of the Rings Trilogy where the adaptation was fundamentally faithful to the original story (I make no claim that Troy matches LOTR in its technical achievement).
Here are some things I enjoyed about the film and some things that I didn't like as much.
Likes:
King Priam's conversation with Achilles will make you cry;
Hector is the most memorable character;
The fight scene between Hector and Achilles was spectacular even without kungfu (image that!);
Cinematography was fresh and modern;
Story flowed quite well (not sure that could be achieved for a ten year war as it was in the Iliad).
Dislikes:
When a thousand ships appeared on the Aegean, the visual was there, but not the music;
Paris and Helen's love story is just not that believable;
Why did all the soldiers stop fighting to look at the fight between Hector and Patroclus (Achilles' cousin)?
It is not easy to make a film of this magnitude especially now when anything less than a flawless visual effect is not worth putting on the screen; all films in this genre will be compared to the great epics that have come before; audiences are not easily awed - it's hard to come up with new 'things' to capture our attention. Where Troy succeeded is in telling its own story; presents its own vision of grandeur and make us connect emotionally with heroes that the original story perhaps never intended. The bottom line is: did I enjoy the film? Yes, I did. Then it deserves an A from me. |
