Did the critics see the same movie I did??

Yesterday I was at the very first screening of "Troy", thereby fulfilling a wish I've had for 40 years. Ever since I was captivated by Homer's "Iliad" at the age of 12, I have longed for someone in Hollywood who loved the story as much as I to bring it to life on the screen, pulling out all the stops. I followed the making of the film for the past year or more, avidly devouring every scrap of news about the production and growing more excited as the day of release approached. I was a little skeptical when I learned of some of the casting choices, but willing to wait and see. Yesterday I was, to say the least, overwhelmed with the result and I intend to see it again today. It is a remarkable film in every way. When I read the reviews of critics that give it a B- or C and denigrate the performances and dialogue, I wonder if they saw the same film I saw, but then, critics often seem more intent on impressing their readership with how sophisticated and intelligent they are than anything else. As a lover of Homer, I found the storyline changes seamless and necessary while remaining true to the story itself, else the film would have been 4-5 hours long. I thought depicting the characters as humans who inhabit a world filled with much talk about the gods without any evidence of their existence served only to make them more real and accessible. Helen wasn't portrayed as unnaturally beautiful, but she was beautiful enough and it was easy to imagine her falling for Orlando Bloom, while it was equally conceivable that her husband would be outraged and want her back, as would any man, regardless of how beautiful she was or wasn't.
I was moved to tears more than once during the film and can't imagine anyone not being touched by Priam and Hector's relationship. And I thought Pitt's conflicted Achilles played well...who wouldn't be conflicted if they made the choice he made regarding his fate? I hope viewers will enjoy this film as much as I did and ignore critics who feel they aren't doing their jobs if they don't criticize.
