Shopgirl is a 'chickflick', and as such may have more appeal to women than men, but I intentionally saw it alone by choice and was not disappointed. Martin has a very keen cinematic eye and the photography of this movie was reminiscent of LA Story, which I felt was a beautifully shot film.
The story was not as predictable as I was led to believe, and in fact I kept pulling for the doomed-to-fail relationship even when it did start to become predictable. It's been many years since Martin was that wild and crazy guy of my youth, but I keep hoping to see that in his performance. However as the older man in Shopgirl that wouldn't have fit, and I was happily surprised at the depth of his performance even though there were probably other actors who would have been more appropriately cast.
There were some decidedly funny moments in the film - primarily by Jason Schwartzman. His cluelessness was well played and again I give a lot of credit to Martin, since the movie is based on his novella. Claire Danes was quite good as well, and I have to admit that I have not really seen much of her other work.
As many romance movies go it will tug on the heartstrings of those of us who have recently felt disappointment in love, and yes I will admit to wiping a couple of drops from my cheek, so if you are the typical guy, go see this movie with your girlfriend, because there are no explosions. If you are a lover of the art of filmmaking or a hopeless romantic, just go see it. |
