Shopgirl is one of those movies where in the middle you go, "What is she thinking?" but at the same time you understand she is getting pretty much everything she wants except the one thing she wants the most. This story is about a lady, Mirabelle (Claire Daines) who works at Sack Fifth Avenue and works behind the glove counter. She doesn't get much business but its a job and she does it. She is very plain-jane and out of sorts for the store. She meets this guy Jeremey (Jason Schwartzman) who is polar opposite of her and they begin this quirky, cute relationship as if they were back in Jr. High. Jeremy has this idea for his career, which he is a font designer for an amp dealer and decides to go on the road with a band to help raise the sales of his boss's store. Mirabelle tells him to go for it and he does. Meanwhile she meets Ray Porter (Steve Martin) who begins lavishing her with all of these wonderful things. She doesn't know why nor does she ask, she just gets swept away by his kindness. These are two completely different relationships, but Mirabelle knows that since Jeremy is gone and that is pretty much over, her relationship with Ray can go further. But there is something missing from the relationship. She is told by a friend that to find the status of the relationship, call him "Sweetheart" and see how he reacts. We sit there and wonder if she ever will.
This story was well written and the characters were very interesting. The acting was great and I expecially loved Clair and Jason. Their comedic timing was great and they had wonderful chemistry. Completely different from the more serious Steve Martin. A great movie and a great story with laughter, romance, and wit. B+
