Possibly the finest film about "pool" ever. Gripping, visually warm...top drawer! The direction, acting, scenery and lighting...all heart felt with the tongue in cheek aside reference to the weather while losing none of the story. Brilliant!
There hasn't been a film, in this genre, that has grabbed me this firmly since "The Hustler". I could watch Mars, Roy (bless his soul), Chris Walken, and of course Mr. Chazz. The work of Michael Rosenbaum and Rick Schroder are beyond compare.
Mars really ought to continue in this realm. His timing and choices are spot on. Once a hustler always a hustler.
The "Hustler" tee shirt is a perfect moment. It will never steer him wrong. His vision is perfection with his mastery of the game/hustle and those handsome Jet Set 60's looks... Dean Martin should have left his "pad" to Mars. Naturally.
p.s. the moments between Sonny and Johnny are reminiscent of "On the Waterfront", the back of the cab scene of ", I coulda been a contenda..", are well comprehended.
This is small film with a mass appeal. Definately deserves a nod from the Academy |
