I must admit that although I've understood most of Terry Gillium's previous movies, I've never been much of a fan. What interested me in this film was the subject matter and the marriage of Terry's offbeat and dark humor to a subject that brings back fond and disturbing memories of youth. Make no istake, the original Brothers Grimm fairy tales are dark, disturbing and not PG13.
I think I mostly enjoyed the creativity that was used in folding Grimm fairy tales into the overarching story. The visuals were strong although at times they felt forced. Almost like he had too much money to spend and decided, wouldn't this be neat to see.
I think most will find the story adequate with enough twists to keep you interested. The acting was weaker than you would hope with the star power included. Mostly a sense that they were in over their head or weren't quite sure whether a given line was funny, serious, or serious to come off as funny.
In conclusion, this isn't a film for anyone under 13. It might not scare them, but they won't get the subtlety that is a Terry Gilliam film. |
