I have to admit, I am not a fan of Tom Cruise, and I am not a fan of cheesy Hollywood Movie, or great-movie-want-to-be "interesting" movies.
When I first approach this film, I was ready to put in my critical daggers; however, I left the theatre with tears in my eyes... Not once, but three times...
So, about the movie. (I assume that you know a little about the plot through the descriptions) The idea of a white samurai was daunting, and some Hollywood effect does mix in, such as the Hero never dies, the must have love scene. But the movie did protray a lot of important values, such as honour, life, loyalty, or being true to oneself and one's beliefs. Although battle scenes do resemble Braveheart, but the director was able to focus more on than honor than the actual fightint, thus make into a saga.
The acting was great. Tom was already, but Watanabe was truely oscar-worthy. His solem face protrays the passion he had for his nation and his people, while his anger makes your heart beat faster. Other Japanese Sammurai did a great job as well, in fact, I feel that they are the ones who the movie is about, not Tom.
If you are like me, who does not watch movies too often (once a month), and do not have any hatred against Japanese or war, I can garentee you that you will like this film.
Well, thank you for reading my humble personal opinion. And sorry for my English, as you can tell I am not American (and I am not Japanese either) |
