First of all I'm relieved to know many people here understood this was the greatest movie of the year. As a Japanese who lives in U.S., since there are too many misunderstandings about Japan Hollywood has had so far, I didn't expect this movie to impress me at all, however, this time they did a great job. I cried three times there.
I've read some critics say that it was a piece of crap. I totally disagree with them, but I know there are some people in this world who can't give any respect to different cultures unfortunately. Let's just leave those people alone and go see the movie for yourself, then you will see what reviews are right.
I think that's really a great movie, maybe because I'm Japanese? Yes, I can say I feel more proud of being Japanese than ever. Also I can say this movie described old-time-Japan almost accurate, very close to real, but not good enough to make all people understand the situation Japanese government had at that time. I wish everybody knew about our history and our culture so that they could understand it right, otherwise many people would misunderstand like "oh my god, what samurai does is chop the head with his sword. How violent!" or something like that. I know samurai chopped enemy's head in the battle, but it doesn't mean that samurai's job is to chop the head, okay? You've got to learn it before assuming. Not knowing is the most embarrassing thing.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention about Tom Cruise, he did a good job, especially with his sword skill, which is not easy even for Japanese people to do now. He must have practiced it so hard. But maybe Tom was not a leading actor in this film...because Ken Watanabe made it the best! I hope Ken Watanabe gets best supporting actor.
There are still the strong feelings such as honor, pride and a lot of respect in my head... |
