CoG is gripping - Harmony Korine's 'KIDS'shocking storyline meets Guy Ritchies 'Lock stock and two smoking barrells' camera work and direction.
I think that might just hit the nail on the head.
This is as real as it gets. As shocking and disturbing the violence is, unfortunately it isnt and exaggeration. The narrator leads you into the heart of the ghetto and clearly shows how easy it is for the oppressed and impoverished to go the way of the 'thug'. Hope is futile. This isnt a 'downer' movie where you are depressed all the way through, but a first person view of a 'world' out of control and you cant help thinking what you would do in their situation. The message clearly sent is 'there is no escape' only assimilation.
The message also shows how fragile life is, and how easy it is for ANYONE to forget/lose their own morals in a given environment.
The questions that remains for me are:
Once someone loses themselves morally by killing, cheating, stealing, to survive - How do they find the road back from whence they came?
What disturbs me more, if children are never taught what is 'right', how will they ever find what that is, and where does the cycle end?
The path to complete chaos is much shorter, we can only hope for 'miracles' in our worlds 'City of gods'.
Watch this movie, it is the truest form of "an eye opening experience". |
