I have read a number of reviews, and it becomes quite apparent that many who have seen this had NO CLUE what they were getting into or what the series is all about. Comments about being too dark for kids and having inappropriate material made me laugh out loud, as these are the very people that the author of the series set out to make fun of!

That said...if you are a fan of the series, do NOT expect to see a blow-by-blow repetition of the books. Instead, the director and screenwriter have done an excellent job of distilling the essentials of the series into a great visual experience. The tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic humor ("You really don't want to watch this") are there, and they do a really great job of transforming the books' sarcastic melodramatic action to the screen. The sets are wonderfully done (looks like Tim Burton!), and the orphans are wonderfully bleak and acted. Carrey does a wonderful job of portraying the evil Count Olaf as a bad guy, but with the light-handed sarcasm that Snicket does so well.

Overall, a wonderfully fun experience, but IF you haven't read the books and don't understand where they are coming from, OR you have NO SENSE OF HUMOR, don't bother going. This movie is NOT meant for very young children or for people who don't get sarcasm or twisted humor.
