Would be great if not for faltery truth...

"House of Sand and Fog" was a phenomenal best-seller (thanks in many parts to Oprah) and is no doubt a precious treasure among the literary world. But how does it transfer to the larger screen? Superbly -- with just a few cracks that slip through.
Ben Kingsley easily steals the show as Massoud Amir Behrani, a former Iranian colonel who moves his family to America for a new future. Excited at the prospects of getting a new home, Kingsley is offered an offer he can't refuse on the auction of a house.
Here's where the truth about real estate gets sketchy: the house was apparently taken from Kathy (Jennifer Connelly) after not paying a measly $500 in taxes; the house is seized and auctioned. Kinglsey and Connelly soon engage in a vicious battle over custody of the home.
Despite the legal snafus, "House" is a nice break from traditional holiday movies for those who are looking for it. Shot with beautiful cinematography and a haunting score by James Horner, "House of Sand and Fog" is sure to please its adult audiences everywhere. |
