Everything about this movie is real. There is nothing Hollywood-Hammy or corny about this film. Calling it "entertainment," though, would be masochistic. This is a movie to go see, only if you need to have your heart broken and your life torn to shreds. Don't go see it is you aren' prepared to break down and cry.
To say the least---it is a serious film. No popcorn needed. It is pure emotive, primal screaming that is completley merciless in it's psychological intensity.
Knowing nothing of the book, I had no idea what this story was going to be about. But now I have to read the book---it must be a masterpiece as well.
The acting and the environment, is so excellent you feel like you are there and these are real people, living an inconceivable nightmare of interrelated, personal tragedies and you are forced deeply into the psyche of these people.
Clint Eastwood just elevated himself, in my mind into the ranks of the greatest living directors.
