This could have been a fantastic movie; it started promising, but left way too many loose ends--plus the fact that several of the most pivotal characters in the last few scenes (such as Penn's wife, the mute brother, and the mute brother's friend) aren't really developed beforehand, causing the ending to be VERY anti-climatic.
The relationship between Penn, Bacon, and Robbins was as two-dimensional as Robbins' abduction and molestation, despite great acting on all their parts. The problem, in the end, was that there simply wasn't enough depth written into the individual scenes, and the ending is disconcerting because no one seems to really care about what happened to Robbins' character.
In short, this movie seems to want to be a deep, riveting commentary on the human condition, but it ends up being a rather sloppy murder mystery... revolving around a rather stupid and unbelievable chain of events that barely get mentioned, much less explained. |
