Reading the other user reviews made me sad in a way because so many did not even understand what the film was about. I read one that said the film was about the differences between the American and Japanese people. Some said they did not understand how Charlotte could find Bob Harris somebody she would want to spend time with. Or that the movie had no plot and moved slowly. Did they go to this film expecting to see Bill Murray and Scarlett Joahannsen jump into bed and suddenly find happiness? Did they expect a film that moved with the pace set by the MTV generation? Did they not even realize that this film just happened to be set in Japan? It could have been set most anywhere. It was about two lonely, adrift people who made a human connection. It was not a sexual connection at all. The acting was magnificent. I have found quiet acting to be much harder to pull off than a good crying sequence or yelling sequence. Just about any actor can pull that off, but put them in a quiet scene where they have to get everything across with little or no dialogue and you separate the great actors from the movie stars. |
