I had high expectations for this movie. No doubt, my expectations were fueled by glowing critical reviews. Many reviews I read by critics whom I usually agree with and respect (now I have to wonder if the industry is completely corrupt). I left this movie feeling nothing. I didn't have to pay for it, so perhaps I would have felt cheated if I had (at least that would have been something). I believe Bill Murray did a good job with the material he had to work with, but the characters were written one dimensional and the story was very weak (and that is a compliment). I don't need, or want, for a movie to manipulate my feelings overtly, I am capable of understanding and appreciating subtlety. This movie does neither. The only thing Sofia accomplished successfully was capturing Japanese culture, however, that is not enough to sustain a movie or my interest. In my mind, there is little doubt that Nepotism is the reason this movie exists and that Sofia's father and his adoring critics are why it may succeed financially. I would not recommend seeing this movie.
