I am a huge fan of the book and was upset to realize from the trailers that there was a Hollywood-style story line that had been added to what was a essentially a low-key travel/home renovation/food narrative. I am a Diane Lane fan, however, so I overcame my reservations and went to see the film...and enjoyed it in spite of the changes.
Yes, it got schmaltzy. Yes, there are significant characters that have been added completely. Yes, there is very little of the narrative voice of the original book.
HOWEVER: It is lovely to look at, the actors are a joy to behold, it is good-humored and good-natured, nobody gets killed and nothing gets blown up, and I didn't feel like a schmuck for paying out my 9 bucks. Its a calm, warm film for grown-ups, and I enjoyed it very much. |
