When I saw Winged Migration, I must have been the only person in the theater that was under 50. I didn't ask anyone to see it with me since I am a bird fan, and most people I know think that bird watching is for eccentric old people. I wish I had dragged someone to see this with me because I thought it was a brilliant film with amazing camera work. My eyes were popping out of my head in awe. I highly recommend it to anyone that is fond of birds and nature. I don't know why anyone would dislike this film. I was shocked to see that some critics did not believe there was a story or that it was just a a series of scenes of birds flying. The story was solid, basically about the journey that all migrating birds endure with the birds as the actors. It wasn't just a collection of shots displaying the beauty of birds in flight. The film really showed the struggles that birds must face during migration, which was effective due to the juxtapostion of comical and happy scenes with more somber and sad scenes. The only problem that I had with the film was the G-rating. I realize that there was no sex or strong language in the film. Perhaps I am too sensitive about birds being eaten alive. I understand that this happens in nature everyday, but it is still upsetting (which is a credit to the makers of this film since they really draw in viewers and make them relate to the birds). It just reminds me of how upset kids are when Bambi's mother dies. |
