Alan Rudolph has not exactly been on-fire recently. His vision has given way to pretension with recent dud's like "Breakfast of Champions" and "Trixie". Rudoloph has lead very good actors to terrible performances in downright unwatchable films. Now, Rudoloph's leads save his film in "The Secret Lives of Dentist", a movie about suspected infidelity. Both Campbell Scott and Hope Davis turn in magnificant performances as a married couple with three little girls whose relationship is falling apart and seems to be having a negative effect on there young children. The story is rich with a clever gimmicks using an often funny and always aggravated Denis Leary as the husband's id, coxing him to go by his gut reaction rather than thinking things through. Rudoloph's does a very good job showing us how this man feels and his struggle with his own suspections but Rudoloph also manages to drag scenes out to questionable lengths. By the last half hour I was checking my watch; there is just not enough story to fill the movies running time. The only thing that truly held my attention was our stars who really makes you believe in there marital struggles thus making it easy to care. This also makes the movie worth seeing. You don't exactly hold your breath to find out "The Secret Lives of Dentist" but you will be satisfied by what you do find. |
