Walked out of the movie ... Horrible!

We walked out in the middle of the movie. It was that bad. In a nutshell: the scenes were so disjoint, with no context and connectivity, that it was like watching the screentests for actors who were vying for the roles. The director must have been on vacation or major scenes were lost or something. There was no build-up, no context -- scenes that were scary came and went with the same characters in the next scene paying no emotional (and barely no) attention. Major encounters with important characters and events took place as if the characters were buying a newspaper from the local newsstand. Trying to borrow from movies such as The Exorcist and others, they go for the self-discovery theme of the main character but the dialogue is boring and cliche-ridden with no preceding character development that the same disjointed feeling occurs. One often welcomes understatement between mysterious characters because it often serves to play nicely against the expectations of the standard frightfest stuff. But this isn't understatement. It's boring, disconnected scenes and dialogue. There's one scene where Ledger's character is struggling emotionally with what to do w/ the mysterious Sin Eater and I watched it baffled. Baffled because there was no real context or build-up for the emotion. Similarly, the self-realization/discovery stuff fails.
This is one movie that looked great from the previews, had enormous potental from some of the scenes and the story line, but failed miserably in the direction. I haven't walked out on a movie in a very long time ... this was such a boring movie that I had no choice. |
