The movie is bad because of the bad direction and lack of flow. This is not a case of the lack of audience sophistication or a mismatch between expectations and what was delivered. It's not a case of the director taking risks and trying experimentally artsy techniques.
This is just a case of a movie that is disconnected and boring. I like all kinds of movies -- from the introspective, dialogue-laden, very-little-action ones to the hollywood thrillers. I enjoyed Clooney's 'Solaris' which fits the former category. I enjoy movies that do experimentation and can appreciate when the director uses a subdued approach (something like Traffic) or an off-beat approach like Raising Arizona. But this was not experimentation. It was not a subdued approach. It was just bad direction. And some bad acting thrown in to make the director feel not alone. |
