No, this movie probably won't win any Oscars, but it doesn't suck either. This was one of the funniest I watched in a theater in a long time. Phileas Fogg (Coogan) and his comrades attempt to circumspect the world in eighty days or less, and manage to do so and win a bet. However, one of his acquaintences accompanying him on the journey, "Passepartout" (Chan), robbed a bank in England to save a sacred Jade Buddha, which was stolen from his village in China. Passepartout, who later stated his real name was Lao Xing, only accompanied Fogg to travel to China and return the consecrated object. You'll enjoy the camaraderie that develops among the three friends traveling the world: one I haven't mentioned yet.
Pros- Great direction, acting, and visual effects. For those who love action, this movie does contain battle scenes. French and Chinese are utilized, though not all words spoken are translated on-screen.
Youngsters will laugh more during this film than adults. No, there's no flatulence in the film, but crotch injuries and humorous scenes will amuse kids. Adults will laugh too, in certain scenes.
Cons- The plot was very predictable. Since I haven't read the original book this film is based off of, I don't know if it follows the original storyline. I wouldn't say the direction was very well done; I gave it a B+. Acting was, for the most part, pretty well done, but there were minor flaws.
If you need a good laugh, see this movie. Otherwise, it may just be a waste of your money if you don't enjoy this two-hour film.
"Around the World in 80 Days" is rated PG. |
