I read most of these reviews and this one looks like a "love it or hate it" movie. So I went and count me in with the "love it" crowd. Extremely prudish people will not get it and object to the satirical nudity. Extreme conservatives will object to the hilarious slam at the US forcing Tony Blair to join us in Iraq and the multi-culturalism. But one thing this movie does is grab a middle-aged audience and force us to leap into the recognition that a new generation is now in charge. A funny, less-formal, less reverant, generation that still has the same problems we had but with a new twist. And they deal with their problems more directly than we did. And it works out. For most people who understand (or are attempting to understand) love or those who have ever been in or have wanted to be in a relationship, this is a great movie you will identify with somewhere along the line. The ensemble cast is tremendous. The aging rocker, "Professor Snape" with a real job, a real family, and a real mid-life crisis, a young Prime Minister who actually can feel some compassion (as well as passion), and the office "romances" that actually happened or never will happen combine into a fantastic picture that will have you smiling through your tears. One of the year's best! I saw it alone. But a great date movie if you don't mind sharing your emotions with someone. |
