This film captures the spirit of why people come to America. It also goes beyond this and shows this family dealing with not only the hardships of living in a new land but the loss of a child. It is a tale of love--true love that goes beyond the boundries of color or nationality. I felt that I was seeing New York city for the first time with the family and the clever use of a camcorder. The two sisters, who are real life sisters, have a great screen presence and really give a captivating and believable performance. Paddy Considine gave an admirable performance as the father taking his family to America to become an actor...and in doing so, moving on with his life after the death of his son. His search for emotion through the film is amazing and in every scene I hurt for him as he has so many inward battles going on. Samantha Morton gave another believable and emotional performance as the mother and support of the family. If it were not for her, Johnny (Considine) would have not been able to function. Djimon Hounsou gives a captivating performance worthy of the Oscar nod. His rage, sadness and love really stands out in the story. He really shows Johnny how to love...in life and in death.
The story was very well constructed and the filming was very captivating and smart. I really enjoyed this film and hope that it gets more than just recognition at the Academy Awards.
It is a story of love, loss and dealing with the past...moving on to a better future.
It is a picture of cinematic magic and an almost childlike innocense that touches my heart and has touched countless hearts of those who have seen it. |
