Interesting but Random

The Fountain centers around a great theme, cheating death/dealing with death, and the acting is outstanding. Hugh Jackman pulls off all of his various characters completely. However, if I had to point out the one flaw to this film, it is that it is very random. The three storylines that hover mystically throughout the film appear in no particular order, leaving the viewer a bit confused. Its style reminded me somewhat of Requiem for a Dream, although maybe not in as poetic a fashion. It seems as though so much more could have been developed concerning the main point of the film, as this is not as clear cut as some would hope for. But maybe this was the desired result, maybe the point of the film was meant to be left up for interpretation by the viewer. Overall, this movie was very pretty to look at, but was a bit slow and needed stronger closure. It is interesting, thought provoking, and a little bit repetitive. Former Aronofsky fans should be love The Fountain. If you do not appreciate his former works, then I suggest you view this film as a simple piece of art, rather than the enthralling, philisophical love story the trailer had you expecting. |
