As a fellow left-wing liberal, I can sympathize with Michael Moore's desire to show the negative consequences of having handguns readily available to anyone with a few dollars with which to purchase them. I personally believe there is no reason to sell handguns that are specifically designed to take human life. That being said, I feel that Moore often misconstrues the facts and takes large, unrelated leaps in order to prove some angle he has taken. The interview of Charlton Heston is directly related to the NRA coming to communities still reeling from gun-related tragedies. However, the attempted interview with Dick Clark was ridiculous in its effort to establish a connection with the very unfortunate child-killing in Flint, Michigan. Moore leap-frogged so many times to get to Clark it was almost like playing the seven steps to Kevin Bacon game. Somehow if Clark's namesake establishment did not provide a workplace for welfare recipients who participated in the welfare to work state of Michigan, the little boy would not have had access to his uncle's gun because his mother would have been around more (although how her money would have stretched further to avoid getting kicked out for non-payment of rent was never established) and the killing could have been avoided. As Jon Stewart says, "Whaaaaa?!" Somehow the connection eludes me. But Moore loves inciting, a la 60 minutes style, by approaching Clark on the street, microphone in face. Isn't this so very like the media inciting he so claims to abhor?
Much of the commentary speaks to American consumerism. Moore's appearance suggests he consumes his fair share and is reflective of what is considered to be the biggest health crisis looming in the United States right now - obesity. Like the pollution in Los Angeles which has become the elephant in the room no one discusses, perhaps Moore should tackle the obesity health crisis and discover that the elephant in this room is himself - no pun intended.
