It's a shame when a good concept is pissed away. Now I wouldn't say David Spade "pissed away" a good concept but he has certainly watered it down. "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" has the makings of a killer black comedy but Spade and company veered the screenplay into a more audience friendly direction. It's a problem Spade has had his whole career; he doesn't know if he wants to be the scathing unlikable cynic or the lovable misunderstood loser. When those two opposite ingredients mix, it all comes off a bit sour. The biggest groaners in "Dickie Roberts" show up during the softer moments and each of these light scenes wear down the films edge. The thing is, when the films funny it's really funny and there are plenty of big laughs especially at the expense of real life former child stars. "Dickie Roberts" is hilarious during its crueler moments when Spade is not trying to be loved and just doing what he does best. |
