Not the best, but definitely better than many

I just got back from this film, so it's fresh in my mind. First of all, I found it better than most critics will have you believe. Yes, it has a number of flaws, but it's still a fun ride. Whether it's as good or better than the first remains to be debated.
Unlike the previous film (which focused on a team reuniting), this film's plot is about being yourself, with a backdrop story of unmasking a villain.
But the real key of the story is Velma (Cardellini) and Shaggy (Lilliard) learning the importance of being who they are. Shaggy and Scooby at the beginning take an oath to be "more like Fred and Velma," instead of their goofy selves. And Velma, with fashion tips from Daphne, attempts to be more glamorous.
What follows is a story of them "finding themselves," and the way they do it may be somewhat clichéd, but then again, so is the phrase, "I would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for you meddling kids!" So it was could be deliberate.
The first film seemed to change moods a lot throughout, as if the filmmakers weren't sure what type of film to make. This second one was more consistant, as if they had rewatched the first one several times and decided what types of parts they liked.
I'll boil it down to this.
Pros: Funny, (sometimes stupidly funny, but it did make me laugh at times). Interesting characters. Touching story about character that is worth hearing every now and then. Oh, and Lilliard as Shaggy. Like the first one, that made it worthwhile.
Cons: Fart jokes. The "rockin'" soundtrack with dancing. Trying to "play up" the monsters with big effects (especially at the end). The "sweetness" of the story bordered on cliché, but again, that may have been intentional.
Sure, it would won't be nominated for an oscar, but that doesn't make it not enjoyable. Best way of deciding if you'll like it or not: if you liked the first one, chances are high you'll like the second one (And no Scrappy-Doo. Thank you). |
