The Stepford Wives, based on the 1975 original, fails to capture the message of the original, simply because it's simply too late. In 1975, when the original debuted, it was a scary rebuttal to the then burgeoning feminist movement. Now, in 2004, the story fails to grab. The masterminds behind the plan just seem so unrealistic in this modern day and age. Don't get me wrong, I'm not denying the existence of sexism, but to honestly imagine anyone taking it to this level is ludicrous.
The acting in this movie is well done on all parts, except the two stars, and that's why I can only give it a fair. Christopher Walken is his usual enigmatically brillaint self. Bette Midler is hilarious as the author laced with attitude, and Glenn Close plays a brilliant mater familia of the gated community of Stepford.
Nicole Kidman starts out quite well as a broken down TV exec who moves to Stepford to help save her marriage to Matthew Broderick. Here's the problem... there's no passion between the two and with no passion, you have no problems. It just seems like their neutral to each other, and to keep the plot going they seem to switch the characters they play often, leaving you utterly confused as to their motivations, and hence uncaring about their characters.
Stepford definitely has comedic moments, but there was no reason to remake this movie to present comedy. You'll laugh with the movie, but you also may find yourself laughing AT the movie. |
