If you read the reviews from people who say this movie was so great, you'll probably notice that 99% of those reviews also mention that they "read the book first". What if you are one of the people who hasn't "read the book first"? In that case, you'll probably find that the movie is a complete waste of time and money.
The movie does very little to explain the jokes, or even the plot for that matter. For example, I know why towels are so important to the characters in the movie. How do I know this? Well, it's certainly NOT because the movie explained it! My friend, who "read the book first", explained it to me. Otherwise I wouldn't have known. I'm also told, from those who have "read the book", that the beer and peanuts the main characters consume before they leave Earth for space holds some importance because, when in space, "they'll need the salt". Why? I don't know...the movie never explained it! What's the point of including jokes from the book if you don't include the punchline??? Why include bits of plot from the book and not explain it to your audience? Unless of course, you assume that everyone in the audience "read the book first", which is absurd. Too bad this movie didn't come with a disclaimer that warns viewers not to see it until AFTER you've "read the book first" because it won't be funny and it won't make very much sense. It's seems pretty stupid to market a movie for a mainstream audience when, in fact, the movie was made to cater only to those who happen to have read this particular book sometime in their lives.
That being said, Rockwell was funny as usual, and played his character with flair. But even he couldn't save this disaster of a movie. |
