I've been a huge fan of this book since I was 8 years old. In fact, I'm on the official website for the movie as one of the 6 biggest fans in the galaxy. That being said, I have a lot of background with the story.
There is a lot of fuss that the movie departed from the original story too much. And while there were many new additions ( the romance between Arthur and Trillion, Zaphod's lady suitor, new characters and so on...)the movie still had a nostalgic feel for the original series.
The story strayed a bit from the original themes, but the essence was still there. All the expected references showed up, and a few for the harcore fans as well.( Ford's use of the word "Belgium" as a curse for example)
Anyone who heard the original radio series knows that the stories changed when they ended up in the novels, and again in the 1981 BBC mini-series.
Douglas always saw the story as evolving, and it really has. Sure we could sit and pick apart the plot piece by piece and find every incongruous moment, but we could never deny that the spirit of fun was still there with it's tongue planted firmly in it's cheek.
I grinned my way through the entire film. Partly because of the humor, but mostly because Douglas' dream had come to life. I am sure that he would have been proud. I know that I was. |
