A Good (But Conventional) Canvas for Kahlo's Life

I approached this movie with trepidation (based on some negative reviews), but was blown away nonetheless. It may not be an inspired masterpiece (read: conventional), but it is compelling in its own right. (Which reminds me of the film Pollock: that is, a conventional biopic depicting an unconventional artist, a pleasant paradox indeed.)
I was particularly moved by the historical context in which the movie is placed. I visited the Kahlo museum in Mexico City, for example, but the neighborhood is nowhere near as wonderful as the setting in the movie. The locations were excellant.
Also, it is a movie that could have lapsed into a dogmatic affair, politically speaking, but it does not. Rather, it "keeps it real," which is to say, focused on the character's feelings and emotions.
Strongly recommended. |
