Her name is Audrey Geisel -- Dr. Seuss' second wife. His first wife, Helen, was an integral part of his creative process, and helped him to realize nearly all of his greatest books (including The Cat, The Grinch, Green Eggs and Ham, Horton, etc.). Dr. Seuss' second wife, Audrey, married him late in his life, after Helen passed away. When they had met, she had never read any of his books. When they married, she had nothing to do with the last few books he wrote. Dr. Seuss was very much a perfectionist, and never let anyone see work that he didn't consider to be finished, and he turned down countless offers to turn his creations into films and cheap merchandise. As soon as he died, however, the gold-digging, grave robbing Audrey wasted no time in plundering his unfinished and/or abandoned projects, and allowing hack writers and illustrators to turn these rough ideas into truly awful books. When this material ran out, she sold the character rights to Universal for theme parks, merchandising, and films. This brings us to "The Cat In The Hat." Of course it was going to be bad and have nothing to do with Dr. Seuss' original intentions. It was an impossible projrct from the start. So now, along with The Grinch, this film will be what future generations of children will consider to be the definitive version of the story (the animated ones that Dr. Seuss did himself with Chuck Jones will eventually be forgotten). Audrey has now gone beyond publishing sub standard work under his name. Now she's ruining his classics. And if you think these films don't undermine Dr. Seuss' original work, go ask a 10 year old kid to tell you the story of The Grinch. |
