Being a teenager myself, I'm not immune to the obscenites of the world, I see and hear most of them just walking through the halls at my public high school; but this movie just made me sick.
Affleck is so unlikable in this movie that it's a wonder Tyler's character doesn't slap him and move on. The only reason she stays is probably to hang out with is kid, an adorable J-Lo look-alike with a charming personality. My favorite character in this movie is definitely Pop, the "alcoholic" grandfather. He interjects insults at Affleck, and generally lightens the sugary air of the movie.
Tyler brings her character to life, in fact, she is the only one to do so.
My biggest problem with this was that my mom asked me to bring my 9-year-old sister to this movie. After watching it (with several other young kids surrounding me) I knew that my sister shouldn't see it until it was censored to become a TV movie. Tyler's character speaks openly about masturbation and casual sex, and Affleck's screaming fit at his daughter, calling her "a little s*it" and telling her that "you and your mother ruined my life," did not move me to sympathize with Affleck. Even worse was the spineless way in which Gertie (the daughter) answered to his not-so-heartfelt apology. Her sleepy "It's OK" made me want to barf. Any self-respecting kid would hold out for more.
This movie's lack of any genuine acting or the frailty of the plotline would not make me reccommend it to anyone. |
