after all this is my hobby. I personally own a collection of over 400 DVDs and invested in a 53 Widescreen HDTV so I think my opinion counts for something here as an avid movie gower and buyer of such.

Horror films tend to be the bulk of my collection. I did not realize it until the other night. So the question comes to mind first off is "Cabin Fever" REALLY a horror movie. The answer is yes and no. Yes in the fact that the events that take place are truly horrible and horrific as one can imagine the panic that would incur if one encountered such an experience. I mean if you knew you were dead within 24 hours and that your death would be a vile, decaying painful death that in itself would be quite horrific. However in the sense of what I consider to be a real "horror" film "Cabin Fever" is not it.

Now we are not dealing with anything super natural here and the fact is that this could happen. We do have viruses such as Ebola that exist and this sort of plays to that virus. So is it possible? Sure. That in itself does indeed make it scary.

So the story is simple here. Some kids want to get away for some partying and sex at a cabin in the woods. They run into a guy who lives in the area (which by the way is redneck heaven) who has been infected by a virus. What we don't find out is why or where this virus comes from. It just sort of appears. One might think maybe we will find this out in a sequel as the door is left wide open for such. Guesses would be military since again there is nothing really super natural about the movie. That would be the safest bet to be honest because to do otherwise would cheapen the whole idea and the true fright factor would be lost.

So they scare the would be infected local away. Now without giving away how they get infected more or less by scaring him away they sort of doom themselves in the process because that leads to the set up of how they become infected.

I gave the all the acting, direction, visuals and overall a "B" however for me the story was sort of been there done that which is why I gave it a "C". I mean I really like the homage to "evil dead" with the camera work so that was a nice nod to Sam Raimi but honestly the story seemed like a rehash. Take your pick here Outbreak, 28 days, Omega Men, Resident Evil. It really does tend to borrow from a bunch of these movies. I understand too that it is hard no a days for would be writers/directors to really come up with something fresh. Especially when it comes to scaring people. I think the best modern day horror film to date that has really done that well was the remake of "The Ring". A true horror movie. In any case I would say "Cabin Fever" is worth a look but honestly do a matinee and don't believe all the hype you are seeing. It is true the critics are usually wrong but this goes on both sides when it comes to a movie being bad or good.
