We just returned from a matinee with one 3 year old girl, two four year old boys and a seven year old boy. The three youngest were seeing their first movies ever. One of the four year olds got scared about 15 minutes in and had to leave, returning for the last ten minutes. The other three kids loved it. It really helped the other four year old that he had been read the whole movie-based version of the book (as well as the original beautiful picture book). If you have doubts about scaring your kid, read the chapter book to them first.
I think the extremely mixed reviews are mostly because of the animation technique which does render some pretty blank facial expressions. I didn't bother four of the six adults (the parents of the young kids) all of whom loved it, but the 15 year old and his dad were less impressed.
In general this is a great film for 3-10 year olds and their parents. We'll go back next month. |
