A Dreary, Lifeless Movie....

"Young Adam" was one of the least involving dramas I've ever seen. There is so much intnsity and emotion, but its ultimately emotionless and lifeless. Essentially, the movie is a softcore porn film with high quality acting.
Ewan McGregor is good as Joel, but seeing him hook-up with every single girl he comes into contact with gets tiresome and tedious. It's essentially an exercise in sitting through constant sex scenes and nudity. And more power to nudity and sex in movies, but ALL of it in this movie is just too much. It takes away from the story, essentially since they have a sad story to tell about a man who passes up his chance of true love and ends up causing her untimely death.
Too bad this film only deals with this story in sub-plots. Instead, it decides to make the main story about his affair with a barge owner and thinks watching them constantly having sex is more interesting. Well, it is shocking how sexually explicit this movie is- but by the end, its old news.
The only character I felt sorry for in this whole movie is Emily Mortimer's character, and she's the girl in the subplot. This movie is ultimately just uninvolving, lifeless, dreary and unnecessary. A big disappointment. |
