Why do we always have to compare Woody movies?

Is it because he's made 37 movies that so many people have the instinctual desire to not judge Woody Allen movies not on the basis it's singular artistic value, but rather in relation to all other pieces of work?
Anything Else, in my opinion, was a very good movie -- more enjoyable than anything I have seen in awhile. It was insightful, engaging, thoughtful and funny. What more could you ask for in a movie. No, it was not an epic adventure in the way The Godfather or Ben Hur is. But when have Woody Allen movies ever been such? Allen's movies are meant to be personal montages of the daily human experience -- that's all.
I hear people complaining that the Biggs/Ricci character relationship is ridiculous in the fact that they're only 22 or 23 yet act as though they're in their mid to late 30's. These are complaints that have plagued Woody throughout his entire career. How come no one was complaining in Manhattan, one of Woody's seminal works, a movie where the beautiful Mariel Hemingway falls for Woody? A 45 big nosed unattractive man with glasses seems to be the perfect match for a 20 year old gorgeous bombshell, right? But it worked....as so does the Biggs/Ricci combo.
So my advice: if you're into the blockbuster, go see SWAT. If you want to leave the theater questioning the choices you have made in life, go see Anything Else. |
