I was fortunate enough to be able to see this film at a sneak preview this week, and it was absolutely incredible. Jamie Foxx, and the actors surrounding him, all did justice to presenting Ray's unique life on the big screen, warts and all.
I have enjoyed Ray's music since I was a small child, and I thought the music sequences were well done. The instruments looked authentic for the time, and the people behind the instruments looked like they knew how to manipulate them convincingly.
The movie was very honest in portraying Ray's shortcomings as well as his strengths, but one aspect I had trouble believing was his "happy ending" recovery from heroin addiction. It just seemed too pat...he struggled getting off of it, wouldn't you think he would have struggled staying off of it? That's the only real complaint I had about the movie, but there was only time to portray so much of his life. I can live with it.
In short, I think that people should go see it before they judge, most definitely. I think it's a great film, but I am a musician and I connected with it on a different level.
You'll enjoy it. |
