In short, they slaughtered the movie. The best parts of the book were NOT in the movie. Do not waste your money and time seeing it. If you want a detailed explanation, keep reading:
I know a bunch of you have read Timeline, by Michael Chrichton. Personally, it's one of the best novels I've ever read. The novel was nothing short of amazing. I went to go see the movie today with a bunch of friends, and I was shocked. Every good part of the book was not in the movie. Remember the part where the mill blows up? The part where Marek jousts with De Ker? The part with the green knight? The end where Chris spits on De Ker and the entire armory explodes? At the very end when Doninger contracts the plague? Remember the little ear pieces that would translate French and would allow the three people to talk to each other?
None of that is in the movie. None of it. For those of you who have read the book and are expecting an awesome movie, you will be sorely disappointed. The movie is definetely not worth six dollars.
Of course, perhaps the movie will actually be enjoyable to those of you who have not read the book. But for those of you who have, you will simply be appalled at how horrible the movie deviated from the book.
In the movie, seven or eight people get sent back to the past. Gomez is a guy and not a chick. This extra guy named Francois gets sent back, because Marek in the movie cannot speak French (which is BS). Then Gordon, the vice-president of ITC (who in the book is the one that sends Doninger back to the past at the very end) gets sent back to the past and killed. Chris is the son of the Professor in the movie, which again is total BS. The movie does not explain the multiverse theory at all, and the only explanation given for the time travel in the first place is that is was an accident. In the movie, Marek kills De Ker and not Chris (spitting). De Ker is about the only person Marek kills. I remember from that book that Marek was such a bad ass and was decapitating people left and right. There is no sword fight on the rafters in the movie. The secret passage is horrible; there is no stream/raft/Chris's torch going out. The secret passage doesn't lead to the fireplace either.
Oh, and in the movie, they only have 6 hours to get back to the present. In the book, they had 37. And when they originally teleport back to the past, they land in the middle of a friggin' river. I was like WTF?? And finally, the time machine itself looks crappy. It's this room with mirrors. No cages like in the book. None of those protective glass tanks with the water in them. |
