"SWAT" is high on energy but low on plot and character development. With names like Street, Hondo, and Gamble, this lets you know that we are stepping into a movie more in tuned to comic books than classic novels; only comics lets us get to know at least one character. The writers and director of "SWAT" just wants you to get to the next action scene, which I would like to add are all very cool and crafty. Director Clark Johnson certainly has a handle on action sequences. Even when they are only showing us training exercises they still keep your heart racing. Many action sequences in other films are very slapdash but "SWAT" has action scenes that seem very well planned and less jarring, like you were right along side the team. It's too bad that same kind of thought was not put into the screenplay, which is chalk full of typical characters and dialogue that you find in every action movie from the foreign villian to the chief of police railing against the cops who don't live by the rules of the book. The screenplay is also a little contrived, taking over an hour to get into the main plot, making the film feel longer than its running time. Thankfully there is a very solid cast that is able to pull themselves over there underwritten roles and hammy dialogue. Screenplay-be-damned, "SWAT" keep smiling. There's nothing quite like action done right. |
