So naturally expecting anything other than a cheesy movie would be asking too much. You're not going to see a Matrix sequel or merchant Ivory here. I went in to an advance showing on Thursday expecting to have fun and that's exactly what happened. My friend and I have been fans of Speed Racer since it aired back in the sixties and we haven't had that much fun at the movies in a long long time. You can tell that the Wachowski brothers paid alot of attention to the original series and most likely loved it as much as we did. There were tons of details that only true die hard fans would know and appreciate. The cast was good. John Goodman made a great Pops Racer and Susan Sarandon was great as Mom Racer and had more lines in this movie than Mom had in the entire series. Spritle and Chim-Chim were suitably annoying like they were in the series. Matthew Fox made a good Racer X and I think having a lesser know actor as Speed worked well. You can even catch Peter Fernandez in the movie who was the original voice of Speed Racer as well as the re-writer of the show for American audiences. The music was the same goofy music that was used in the series. I even appreciated them using some of the original Japanese theme song at the beginning of the closing credits. Mach Go Go Go! |
