It's innovative, it's bright, it's fast. It's funny, it's not meant to be taken too seriously, and it's well acted. It's based off a simple anime whose basic episode had a simple premise: The Racer family struggles against evil corporations whose only goal is to make more money. Along the way Speed is helped out by Racer X. It's a family story, one that many can relate to.
The visuals alone make the movie superb. We are seeing a trend in movies to experiment with CG. In the 90's we saw movies make things that weren't there (T2, Jurassic Park among others). What we are witnessing now is film experimenting with how far CG can go, and more importantly, how it can create a whole new environment from the imaginations of one person. We have seen this done with the Star Wars prequels. (Yes, it was a rocky start, but they did improve visually over time)Sin City, 300, and now Speed Racer continue this great experiment. Please, go support this film, if for no other reason then so that we can witness what comes next. |
