Whenever the Farrelly Brothers come out with a new movie, you can almost always expect a barrage of negative reviews from most critics. Having said that, you should also know that "The Ringer" is harmless fun rather than a joke that's been made at the expense of the mentally retarded.
The story is formulaic, but it's still kind of fun to watch because the developmentally disabled co-stars are funnier comics and better actors than Johnny Knoxville himself. Of course, I'm not expecting this to be an Oscar contender any time soon because it's too low-brow for the curmudgeons at the Academy. The actual comedy is so-so, but there are a few good laughs inbetween the overused jokes.
The direction is predictable, and the visuals are so-so, mostly because fake puke isn't supposed to be obvious. Also, the camera shots when the races are on aren't supposed to be so cheesy.
If you really want to see this, go on ahead. It's not harmless, in spite of its politically incorrect nature. My advice to you is not to expect too much. |
