A Critical Evaluation (aka it was damn good)

At the beginning I thought that the film was going to be awkward. After all, the visual of people throwing burning eviction notices from their windows is a bit much. But, if you've seen the show you already know how melodramatic it is. However, from that point on the movie gets SO much stronger as it picks up steam. The vocals are all pretty damn sharp, and rosario dawson is simply put, amazing. I was so surprised the movie was Pg-13 considering how gritty it was: drug usage, nudity, cursing. There were some cool elements of back story. When i saw the sneak preview the entire audience was sobbing. Being an enormous fan of the show I was so skeptical about the movie- quite frankly, i figured Christopher Columbus of Harry Potter fame would botch such a gritty music, but it is SO much more powerful and moving than I ever imagined it would be. The last ten minutes are absolutely haunting, and are still in my mind. A much more faithful adaptation and moving experience than Chicago or any other recent broadway adaptations. |
