The subject of Pride and Glory has been explored so many times now that it is truly difficult to imagine just what there is left to expose about the corrupt cop universe. I was entertained by the film, but only because of the surface level talent on display, such as the outstanding performences, the rest... is routine. We have good cops, bad cops, and the guys who are stuck in the middle. Edward Norton is excellent as Raymond Tierney (one of the good cops), Colin Farrell is effectively viscious as Jimmy Egan (one of the bad cops), and Noah Emmerich is sympathetic as Francis Tierney Jr. (who's wife is dying of cancer), the three men are brothers, and as such they are forced to deal with the typical family splitting issues brought on by corrupt cops in law enforcement. Jon Voight (Francis Tierney Sr.), who's lines sound the most dated in the entire film is also good, for what its worth. However formulaic this film may be, I found that it was indeed working for me until about the last 20 minutes, when its events become a little far fetched and nonsensical. There is a scene in the film's final moments where Ray and Jimmy decide to settle their differences with a fist fight in a bar, complete with Irish drinking music playing in the background, now the best reason I could come up with for this little confrontation is that the two men believed it to be a matter of family honor, of blood, and that the fight was necessary to prove who is more worthy of that honor. In any case, the scene kinda comes way out of left field and seems ridiculous. I will not go into the other events surrounding the films conclusion, but I will say that they too are all equally preposterous. The strange grouping of events at the end remains the film's only unpredictable aspect, otherwise... Pride and Glory can be placed right there with Serpico, Cop Land, The Departed, Narc etc.. |
