Don't be confused, this movie is nothing like its predecessor. But it does answer and explain questions about the original. This movie succeeds in what it does, and that is provide visually AMAZING graphics and spectacular fight scenes.
The movie begins 5 yrs after Vin Diesel's character, Riddick, escapes from the mysterious planet in Pitch Black. After an encounter with a merk (bounty hunter), he seeks out the two other survivors on Planet Heloum, only to find out that a radical religious leader/commander bent on universe domination has arrived. From there the plot takes off......
Complaints: 1)Riddick's kill count exceeds the finger and toes counting system 10 times over, so I understand diversity in the fashion he slays the poor souls would be difficult, but did we really need to see that scene where he uses WWE-style body slams, suplex, and other various wrestling moves (even the antagonist joins the Battle Royal by performing a show-boating back breaker move)
2) granted this is a fictional sci-fi movie, no where near realisitic, I understand that and enjoy watching these types of movies, but was Judi Dench's character walking around the entire movie as a ghost-like figure necessary?
3) Predictable...a good, deep plot twist would've been nice. But this is do-able
High Notes: 1)the older Jack (aka Keira now). WOW, i think she needs her own post-Pitch Black pre-Chronicles of Riddick movie. I enjoyed watching her fighting style almost as much Riddicks.
2) Being a guy, and this being some what of a bad boy action guy movie...the fighting rocked!
3) Visuals....easily one of the best CGI-generated movies of the year
4) the comedy...yes, the comedy. Many one-liners that lighten the mood.
