The original stageplay which celebrates it centenary in 2004 is well served by this production. It remains faithful but not slavish to the original, with all additions or changes made to add to the story rather than detract from it. The Pan character is played very well although not perfectly - but this is a very complex character to play and Jeremy Sumpter does credit to himself. Wendy and the Lost Boys are a revelation... all are unknows and they bring charm and childish beauty to the screen as never before. The role of Hook is deftly played by Jason Issacs who shows the savage and the sad, pathetic side to this complex character. It's an enchanting film that is shamelessly sentimental without being schmaltzy. Many people may dislike this this version because it takes them out of their "Disney Pan" / "Hook" comfort zone. The pirates are deadly and ruthless, the mermaids mysterious and murderous, and Pan is thoughtless and self absorbed as he is written. If you can't handle those notions, or undercurrents of sexual tension and energy, then the neutered, syrupy Disney version (or the awful "Hook") are avail able to you. When you're ready to see the real thing...here it is! |
